The typical background of a Board Director is a senior business executive, with C-Suite level experience, and prior background in dealing with P&L, Finance, Legal, Risk Management, and Business Operations. Most Board Directors will have several formal qualifications including MBA, Business Degree, and Legal or Accounting qualifications, combined with current Governance & Board Director training from a recognised Director Institute. There is no sugar-coating the fact, that the bulk of board directors come from a corporate background and have served their time, working their way up to the most senior roles in the company before they start their board director careers.
